Starch+ Advanced Coatings
Layering value on top of value
Built to enhance packaging performance. Ready for what’s next
From poor film formation and surface strength to compatibility issues with existing equipment, many “green” alternatives fall short where it matters most. As pressure mounts to eliminate Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and meet sustainability targets, the need for a reliable solution has never been greater.
Let Ingredion help you move forward with innovative, sustainable and cost-effective coating solutions: FILMKOTE™ and REDIFILM™ barrier starches.

Solutions that address the problem from all sides-for paper mills
Built for today’s packaging demands, Advanced Coatings help paper mills enhance surface strength—without equipment changes or performance trade-offs.
- Replace PFAS in oil and grease resistance (OGR) applications for paper packaging
- Can be used on existing application equipment for water-based coatings: size press, rod coater and blade coater
- Compatible with most coating additives
- Superior surface printability*
*Not compatible with chromium compounds, soda ash, sodium bicarbonate and highly cationic additives.

Functional and ready for your converting line
Built for today’s packaging demands, our Advanced Coatings deliver the functionality you need—without compromising sustainability or efficiency.
- Replace synthetic additives in a variety of processes while continuing to meet performance metrics
- Can be used as a binder in coating formulations that provide additional barrier properties (oxygen transmission rate (OTR), moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), heat sealability and water resistance (WR))
- Can be used on existing application equipment for water-based coatings
- Enhanced film forming
- Can be used on existing application equipment for water-based coatings: flexopress, rod coater, blade coater and gravure

Compliance you can count on
Certification
- Certified BPI compostable
Regulatory status
- 21CFR 178.3520 (FILMKOTE™ barrier starches)

- 21CFR 170.180 (REDIFILM™ barrier starches)

FILMKOTE™ barrier starches for custom barrier formulations
Experience better runnability, improved film formation, and enhanced barrier properties for oil and grease resistance compared to conventional starches. The shear-thinning rheology of FILMKOTE™ starches benefits runnability on oil and grease resistant paper grades.
FILMKOTE™ barrier starches are compatible with common surface treatment additives, including most sizing agents (AKD, SAE, SMA), latex, AZC or KZC (zirconium-based crosslinking agents), thickeners (CMC, sodium alginate) and salt.

Ready to use REDIFILM™ liquid barrier starches
REDIFILM™ liquid barrier starches offer the same chemical composition and performance benefits as FILMKOTE™ barrier starches, but as ready-for-use liquids that do not require cooking.
REDIFILM™ liquids are designed to simplify the complexities of formula makedown and associated coating system challenges or limitations—common in developmental trials, on specialty grades in paper mills and in converting applications.
