Replace synthetics with plant-derived coatings

To leave the environmental and health concerns of synthetic coating technologies behind, wrap up multiple advantages with our naturally derived oil- and grease-resistant specialty coating solutions.

Enhance performance with wet-end/dry-end solutions

Draw on our OPTIBOND®/OPTIPRO® wet-end starches and TOPCAT®/REDIPRO® high-charged cationic ready-for-use natural polymers to retain additives and enhance finished product performance.

Replace synthetic coatings

Overcome the environmental and health concerns of synthetic coatings with our naturally derived oil- and grease-resistant specialty coating solutions. Sustainably sourced from plants like waxy maize and tapioca, FILMKOTE® and REDIFILM® specialty surface starches feature unique hydrophobic functionality that enables them to far outperform traditional surface starches.

Beat grease and oil — along with the fluorocarbon concerns

If you're manufacturing sack kraft, grease-resistant grades, food wrap, fry scoops or microwave paper, replacing fluorochemicals with safe, naturally derived alternatives is key. FILMKOTE® and REDIFILM® barrier starches are a natural alternative to achieve required oil and grease resistance with a range of products for your surface treatment requirements. The switch can pose challenges, but we can help you move to a smarter formulation to achieve required oil and grease resistance with our extensive range of naturally produced products for all your surface treatment needs.

TOPCAT® cationic additives
High-charged cationic, ready-for-use natural polymers
Designed for paper/board mills without a dry starch handling/cooking system, but current grade structure or new grade development require increased internal strength development and improved retention/drainage performance. Especially useful in high anionic trash containing machine systems for charge neutralization and wet-end additive efficiency
Dry-end product (ingredient) family
Description
Application
CATO-SIZE® modified starches
Cationic, viscosity modified mill-cooked starches
For use in mills requiring a low level of BOD in the effluent due to environmental permit considerations. For use in the production of paper grades requiring excellent surface strength with enhanced printability
DOUGLAS® modified starches
Oxidized, viscosity modified mill-cooked starches
Cost competitive mill locations producing commodity grades that need a moderate level of surface strength and printability
FILMKOTE® modified starches
Superior film forming, thixotropic, viscosity modified mill-cooked starches
Provides superior barrier performance compared to traditional surface starch products for use in paper grades requiring a level of oil and grease resistance; helping to eliminate or reduce fluorochemicals grades requiring a high level of porosity development
KOFILM® modified starches
Acetylated viscosity modified mill-cooked starches
Suitable where high surface strength is important for use in printing and writing grades or strength development in board grades, where product stability and consistent viscosity control are required
PENFORD GUM® modified starches
Hydroxyethylated, viscosity modified mill-cooked starches
Suitable where high surface strength is important for use in printing and writing grades or strength development in board grades, where starch stability and consistent viscosity control are required. Appropriate for use in all size press and/ or waterbox applications
StacKOTE™/PENFILM®modified starches
Acid-thinned waxy maize mill-cooked starches
Superior runnability in grades requiring high surface strength with enhanced printability especially in mill locations having hard water
REDIFILM™ liquid natural polymers
Ready-for-use natural polymers
Easy for use specialty starch product which provides barrier properties with enhanced surface strength and printability
Coating product (ingredient) family
Description
Application
FILMKOTE® modified starches
Superior film forming, thixotropic, viscosity modified mill-cooked starches
Product provides thixotropic response in coating rheology, which improves runnability and performance over traditional starches in demanding coating applications. Highly effective anti-blocking agent for use in coated board formulations. Barrier starch technology useful for developing oil and grease resistance performance
PEN-COTE® L liquid coating binders
Ready-for-use liquid coating binder
Liquid coating starch suitable for use in coating formulations where the solids content of the formula limits the use of traditional starches. Provides excellent water-holding of the formulation and helps reduce binder migration. Suitable for latex replacement in paper or board applications
PEN-COTE® D coating binders
Ready-for-use dry powder coating binder
Dry "stir-in" coating binder mixes into pigment slurry without cooking. Suitable for use in coating formulations where higher solids content of the formula improves coating efficiency and drying. Superior water-holding also improves formulation performance, reducing binder migration even further with higher coating solids. Suitable for latex replacement in paper or board applications
PENFORD GUM® modified starches
Hydroxyethylated, viscosity modified mill-cooked starches
Traditional coating starch, used as a co-binder with latex
