Samworth Brothers Charity Challenge

June 20, 2019

The Samworth Brothers Charity Challenge is a biennial event comprising of a triathlon of hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. Organised by food manufacturing company, Samworth Brothers, the aim is to complete the triathlon and raise as much money for charity as possible. Since the event was created, it has raised over £2 million for various charities.

This year, eight Ingredion colleagues volunteered to take part, in two teams of four. Their goal was to raise money for two charities: The Christie, one of Europe’s leading cancer centres based in Manchester and the Batten Disease Family Association (BDFA).

After a six-hour journey from Manchester to Somerset, the day started early for the teams as they learned exactly they would be doing for the day. The challenge consisted of:

  • Three hours of hiking
  • Three hours of kayaking
  • Four hours of mountain biking, starting with a 1,200-foot ascent

The two teams raised an impressive £5,000 for The Christie and BDFA and are planning to enter the next challenge in 2021.

At the most recent count, the 2019 Samworth Brothers Charity Challenge has raised over £350,000 for a range of charities, along with a further £50,000, which will go to the local community in Porlock, the event’s host town.

A huge congratulations to our eight brave colleagues and good luck planning for the next event!
